Street Department

The Street Department consists of 1 supervisor, 4 full time equipment operators, 1 full time mechanic, and 1 part time employee that works at the Riley Street brush site. These employees are responsible for 10.87 miles of major streets, 19.49 miles of local streets and 24 miles of storm sewer maintenance.

Responsibilities


The daily maintenance of streets may consist of numerous different duties including blacktopping and patching, grading gravel, street sweeping, trimming trees, mowing road shoulders, trimming around signs, cleaning storm sewer catch basins, cleaning ditches with backhoe, repairing manholes and catch basins, painting "Stop" bars, parking bars and crosswalks on streets, installing and repairing signs and sign posts, maintaining traffic signals, repairing bike paths and sidewalks, snow plowing and snow removal from city streets, sidewalks and parking lots. Tasks also include salting of city streets and roadways along with maintenance and cleaning of the city's sanitary sewer system. We also repair brick pavers and light bollards in downtown Zeeland.

The Street Department is also included in Pumpkinfest, Memorial Day, and many other activities and special events that the city offers.

Construction Projects


The Street Department is involved in the designing and planning of all future construction street and bike path projects. Our goal is to make the City of Zeeland streets and sidewalks as safe as possible while staying in the budgeted guidelines that we have. We are constantly working on our 10-year street plan trying to stay within a $1.2 million dollar budget. Included in this is bike path and sidewalk construction.

Services


Some of the special services that we provide are City Spring Curbside Cleanup, the Day of the Young Child, Fall Leaf Pick-Up which takes place in the month of November and Christmas Tree Disposal at Riley Street Brush Site.
